We all like to be treated well. That means being respected, valued, liked and loved — and maybe even getting surprise cookies, too. Treating yourself and others well is key to building and maintaining positive community in school, at home and in our world. So go ahead. Sprinkle on a little extra kindness. Someone else's day — and yours too — will be sweeter for it.
Get ready, get set, your 2019 kindness retreat is a GO! We are going to have a great day tomorrow. Your job this week is to bring back one thing from the kindness retreat that you want to set as a personal goal for the year! Keep that in mind tomorrow and you will have a change to record it before we leave to come home.
Expressing gratitude is a shortcut to a positive attitude and is one of the best ways to honor the important people in your life. Today, take a minute to thank someone for their friendship, for their guidance or for just being who they are — in whatever way feels most genuine to you. That may look like a handwritten note, a phone call, coffee pick-up or a hug. Showing thanks takes a little bit of time and intention, but it's likely your efforts will be met with gratitude in return.
When we feel overwhelmed, we often talk of looking for "the light at the end of the tunnel." We try to move through challenges quickly and as painlessly as possible. But, in doing so, we diminish the light within us. Today, honor your light by focusing not on your destination, but instead on the strength you have for the journey. And don't forget to celebrate all the little victories along the way.
It's a busy time of year. It's also an important time to slow down, take stock of what's important and honor the people in our lives. Today, give your friend a high five, write a nice note to your coach or thank your teachers for all they do! Your effort to honor others will no doubt be much appreciated in return.
Spring may signal the end of the academic year, but that doesn't mean we're done learning. Practice being curious today. Ask a new question. Read a new book. Try a new activity. This spring, don't let the flowers have all the fun — work on growing your mind, too.
Procrastination. Lack of concentration. Demotivation. It's the end-of-the-school-year slide. With summer beckoning, it can be tempting to just coast to the finish line, but don't settle for less from yourself. Today, ask a few friends to hold you accountable to your goals. Then, when you reach the end of the year, you'll have so much more to celebrate.
Smiles are contagious! Today, challenge yourself to spread joy. You could greet the shy kid in the school hallway or give a friend a compliment. You could bring positive energy into your classes by being the first to volunteer or by encouraging a peer that's working hard to keep it up. You could even spread joy by not taking yourself too seriously. However you do it, recognize that when you spread joy to others, your joy will also grow — it's contagious, after all. Sometimes we're not very nice to ourselves. We need to learn how to be kinder, not only to others, but also to ourselves. Need a compliment? Click here!
