Our world is filled with differences — of opinions and cultures, of families and beliefs. We can choose to let our differences divide us, or we can let curiosity draw us closer. Today, choose to see the separation as an opportune space for a bridge — you! Compliment the student who debated with you in class. Take a friend with you to sit with new people at lunch. Ask the kid about the inspiration behind their outfit that you'd be too scared to wear. When you act as a bridge, you get to experience so much more of the world. And when you expand your worldview, your respect and appreciation for those who are different from you will likely grow, too.

Respect can be tough to define, let alone to practice. If you're struggling to show respect — to your classmates, teachers or parents — start by listening. Giving someone your attention demonstrates that you value them. It reaffirms that their experiences, knowledge and voice have worth — even if you don't always agree with how they use them. Today, exercise respect by abandoning the urge to get the final word and, instead, listen first. In many ways, this season has been one of change. As the world shifts around us, it's important to remain rooted in the values, like respect, that uphold and strengthen our community. We need to be able to work together with those in our classes, busses and lunchrooms — even those who are unique from us. In the midst of the unknown (and the fear that often accompanies it), remember to ground your actions in character. Then, remain rooted.
