Robert Frost wrote that taking the road less traveled made all the difference. When faced with a crossroads in everyday life, taking the unpopular route — often the high road — requires more than poetic inspiration. It takes courage. Sometimes, this looks like working toward goals others say you'll never achieve. Other times, this means walking away from situations you know are unproductive or even unhealthy. Today, leave doubt and unkind behavior behind and find your own path. Who knows? With your help, the high road might become the road more traveled.

Living courageously requires great strength. When gravity is just one of many things pulling you down — when you don't make the team, when your best effort doesn't get you the grade, when friends fall away — meeting each day with character is especially difficult. If that's where you're at today, hang on. Use this challenge as an opportunity to practice acting with courage. When that weight eventually lifts — and it will lift — you'll find that you've grown stronger through the stress. Then, use your newfound strength to stand tall and move forward, boldly. Once in a while, we could all use a little push. When we've been rooted in our routines, when we've been stuck in negative thought patterns, or when new opportunities come our way — we need positive friends to help us move forward. Their confidence in us provides us with the courage and momentum we need to make a change. Think of a friend of yours who is in need of a push. How can you help to motivate them? If you need to make a change, how can your friends keep you accountable?
Look around you. There are everyday heroes in your midst. You'll recognize them not by their capes, but by their courage. They stand out from the crowd because they stand up for the downtrodden. You want to know a secret? You can become an everyday hero too. Be a friend to the kid who always gets picked on. Put an end to the gossip at your lunch table. Choose not to do the the thing you know is wrong. In short, the first step to being someone's everyday hero is to take a stand. Will you?
We encounter moments of choice every day. Moments when we could stand up for others or just walk away. Moments when we could do what's right or what's popular. Moments when the voices around us threaten to drown out our inner voice. Often, these moments are over in an instant. Today, challenge yourself to be ready to act with courage when — not if — these moments come.
